The interaction of material surfaces with biological matter is an area of great importance.   The manner in which the surface of a material interacts with biomolecules can determine the success or failure of an implant.

Services are available to study and compare the bioreactivity of materials.  Absorption isotherm and kinetic studies can yield information regarding the mechanism of interaction. Various surface modification techniques, such as plasma bombardment, coating, and hydrophilic/ hydrophobic modification are available to alter the bioreactivity of materials under certain conditions. Within one sample, treatment in discrete areas can render some zones bioinert and others bioreactive.

Client Solutions

  • Adsorption isotherms on Ti and Ti-6Al-4V were compared to determine the reason that they interact differently with identical amino acid groups.
  • The effect of sterilizing methods on the adhesion of fibronectin to implant materials was determined.
  • Plasma treatment of polymers altered their bioreactivity.
